Smoke Detectors. According to the National Fire Protection Association smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. One should expect that all exterior wood trim will inevitably deteriorate and eventually need to be replaced. We recommend regularly painting and sealing all of your exterior wood trim. Doing so will extend the serviceable life of your wood trim and keep your home beautiful.

Changing the air filter within your furnace is not only good for the air quality within your home, it's also a money saving technique. A dirty or even worse absent air filter allows dust and particles to contact the evaporator coil and blower within your furnace/air handler. Over time this will decrease the serviceable life of your unit and cause you to replace the unit sooner than may have otherwise been necessary. Change your furnace air filter monthly.

A 5 minute shower releases a half pint of moisture into your bathroom. Not removing that moisture will cause the formation of mildew and possibly mold. How long are your showers?

The solution, run your bathroom vent fan while you shower to release the moisture to the exterior of the home.

Come back tomorrow for another home health tip.

Energy and cost conservation, something that we are all concerned about.

When cooking on the range top it's best to match the size of the pot being used to the burner that is closest in size to the pot. This way no energy is lost/wasted and your food will heat more expeditiously and efficiently. Using a large burner and a small pot causes you to loose heat to the ambient air. Oppositely, using a small burner and a large pot causes the burner to work harder for longer in order to heat the contents of the pot.
